Thanks for creating and sharing this story. I await the next installment anxiously! I’ve already recommend it to friends.

Why didn’t Solomon/Earth try to initiate contact with the sentient lifeforms of th.e ruby planet? Couldn’t they try to talk first? Also, if the planet is 1000s of light years from Earth, did the aliens have some explorers who found Earth centuries previous? Obviously, they couldn’t have heard radio signals from Earth unless they had some probes or explorers closer to the Sol system.

Lots of questions seeking many answers. :-)

    Stephen,

Do you think you could blog about how you came up with the story and the characters? How did you decide to create the character of Solomon and why did you decide to make him black. I ask about race because it does matter in our society. Most science fiction novels written by white authors feature non-white leading characters (or do so without making the focus on race or fall into racial stereotypes).

The author Tobias Buckell has an article on writing the other. http://www.tobiasbuckell.com/2006/01/13/douglas-blaine-on-shame/

BTW, I made the assumption that you are “white” based on your photo. Of course, you could look white but are multiracial and consider yourself as such. ;-)

    Hi JR,

Thanks so much for your interest in the story. I do plan on writing up some commentary with regards to the origin of the story/characters, so that’s definitely coming up in the future. You asked in a previous comment where you may have been directed to Alien Echo from. As far as I know, there haven’t been any Newsarama articles yet, however, I have been advertising on Broken Frontier and through Facebook, so its possible you came here from one of those sites. As far as story questions, I’ll be happy to answer lingering questions once the story is done with. That’s my sneaky way of keeping you on the hook. But again, thanks so much for the interest, I’m so glad the story generated such a curiosity, and I hope you stick around for the ride!

    SRB,

Hey, I like the story a lot and plan to continue the ride. I did find the link/ad from Brokenfrontier.

I’m surprised that Newsarama hasn’t reviewed the story yet.
